T-Mobile, Yahoo ink exclusive European mobile search deal
Yahoo concluded a strategic partnership with mobile operator T-Mobile to become the exclusive mobile search provider for European customers starting in March 2008. The companies plan to work further on their collaboration in working on a specific 'oneSearch' experience and on providing customers additional Yahoo services such as Flickr, Messenger, Mail, Weather and Finance.
Yahoo already has similar deals with operators such AT&T, Telefonica or America Movil.
Our take... Without a strong starting point to build its strategy on, such as hardware for Nokia or the Android platform for Google, Yahoo is increasingly moving towards an operator-friendly approach. Operators also seem to value Yahoo's advances in mobile-centric solutions, as well as its independence. Whether the tentative buyout from Microsoft might impact Yahoo's relations with operators remains to be seen.
