Mobile TV becomes a reality in China
During the recent World Mobile Congress held in Barcelona last February, fabless semiconductor company Telegent Systems signed a deal with Chinese handset manufacturer Konka to embed its latest mobile TV receiver chip in Konka's handsets. Telegent Systems' single chip enable the mobile reception of current analogue TV signals on handheld devices. While portable analogue TV has been around for decades, power consumption and nomadic mobility restriction (i.e. not able to watch while on the move) have been some of the main drawbacks for its deployment on mobiles. However, Telegent Systems overcame those problems using advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology and shipped over 5m units in only nine months, among which approximatively 2.5m in China. Konka expects to ship its mobile TV handsets during 2nd quarter 2008. The company sold 5m handsets last year, a 40 per cent rise compared to 2006.
Our take... Telegent Systems created a disruptive technology which enables handset manufacturers to be in total control of the mobile TV value chain. The deployment costs are massively reduced as there is no need for new spectrum and a separate infrastructure. Because analogue TV signals are used, there are no royalties or licence fees associated to the new mobile TV technology. The service is inherently free to air therefore boosting customer adoption although the number of channels remains limited. Already five operators are procuring handsets embedded with Telegent Systems' mobile TV technology. China is currently selecting a national mobile TV standard and plans to deploy the corresponding network before the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games next summer. Although the Chinese government has not yet decided on the standard to adopt, the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) has already deployed its owned standard called CMMB in more than 35 cities. Telegent Systems sees its technology complementary to the national mobile TV standard since it will enable mobile TV access in areas not likely to be initially covered by the new network. Screen Digest believes that Telegent Systems' approach is likely to interest developing countries where the funds required to build a new network for mobile broadcasting cannot be justified and where analogue switch off won't occur in the short/medium term.

Mobile media ad opportunities
The market for advertising in mobile TV, video and games. Over half the global population is estimated to have a mobile phone. Browsing capability, e-mail and value added services will contribute to making the phone a viable alternative to a computer for many users, or even the primary connected device in markets with low PC equipment rates. This primary status is highly valued by advertisers and is expected to transform mobile into a major advertising medium.
