> Orange and T-Mobile cooperate for mobile TV trial in the UK

Two of the leading mobile operators in the UK are to participate in a mobile TV trial in the west part of London for 6 months starting next summer. Mobile multimedia technology company NextWave Wireless will provide infrastructure and software components necessary to deploy the MBMS-based mobile TV service. Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) is a technology standard which enables mobile operators to provide mobile broadcast services over existing 3G networks. NextWave proprietary solution TDtv which will be used in the trial includes the network infrastructure and a chipset and software package for handset manufacturers. MextWave's subsidiary specialised in mobile multimedia software development PacketVideo will provide the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) and a client-server software application to help mobile operators to develop on-device portals. 1,000 TDtv compatible handsets will be distributed to each mobile operator to trial the TDtv platform which will deliver 24 high-resolution (i.e. 300 Kbps) TV channels and 10 radio stations. Business models to be tested include free to air, pay TV and hybrid models. One handset manufacturer and several content providers will participate in the pilot. Names haven't been disclosed yet.

Our take...
This is the second TDtv trial in the UK. The last trial which took place in Bristol during winter 2006/2007 aimed to prove the technical reliability of the platform. Several mobile operators have expressed interest in the technology because it works on UMTS TDD spectrum which has been acquired during 3G auctions but remains idle so far. As a broadcast technology, TDtv can deliver mobile TV to an unlimited number of users while current mobile TV services offered by operators over 3G uses a one to one communication channel thereby limiting the number of simultaneous users to a dozen per cell, depending on service quality. So far, TDtv has failed to emerge because of a lack of compatible handsets. TDtv was originally developed by IPwireless which NextWave acquired in April 2007 for up to $235m depending on revenue milestones through 2009. NextWave's hardware experience has given a much needed push to the technology with the launch of the TDtv Device Integration Pack this month. This new product will make the technology more attractive to handset manufacturers. Screen Digest believes that TDtv is likely to initially emerge in territories where regulation and spectrum allocation does not allow the deployment of separate mobile broadcast infrastructure such as the UK.
