Sony BMG joins Nokia's Comes With Music
Sony BMG is the second major record label to join Nokia's 'Comes With Music' (CWM) service. Sony BMG's announcement follows Universal Music's partnership with Nokia in December 2007. CWM is a dual download service offering consumers unlimited permanent music downloads for 12 months with the purchase of specific Nokia handsets. At the end of the year, users can transfer the music to another Nokia device should they choose to change handset. At any one time, the service can only be licensed to one mobile handset and one PC. CWM is expected to be launched in the second half of 2008. Our take...In 2007, Nokia sold 146m music enabled devices, making it the top music device retailer worldwide. Nokia's recent drive in launching mobile music services highlights the company's ambition to become the world number one in digital music sales. To do so, Nokia must dislodge Apple.
The company's a-la-carte download store, Nokia Music Store, is steadily being rolled out worldwide following its launch in the UK in November 2007. Despite some operators' reluctance to offer the Music Store enabled handsets and Warner Music Group refusing to offer its content in the store, Nokia Music Store is currently live in the UK, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Singapore. Further launches are expected in Australia and France later this week, with additional launches in Spain and Sweden in the first half of 2008. CWM is the second of three planned phases of Nokia's music services. The first was the launch of the Music Store and the third being the integration of both the Music Store and CWM under the Ovi banner.
According to Nokia, having both Sony BMG and Universal Music on board gives it over 60 per cent of music released by the majors and the company is optimistic about securing deals with the remaining two major record labels. Although exact figures were not given, Nokia stated that label revenues from the service will be based on the share of downloads from the service. As with the Music Store, Nokia reported a mixed reaction from operators towards the CWM handsets. Some operators have been reluctant to sell handsets which include the CWM service or which are integrated to the Music Store. It remains to be seen whether Nokia will be able to talk round these operators and sign the remaining major labels (particularly Warner) before the launch of CWM handsets later this year. Screen Digest views these two factors as critical to the success of Nokia's music ambitions.
