> Glu offers $36m for 3D mobile games developer Superscape

US-based mobile games publisher Glu has offered 10p per share for UK's AIM-listed Superscape. Superscape specialises in 3D mobile games development. The deal represents a 29 per cent premium on Superscape's closing share price, prior to the announcement, of 7.75p and values the company at around £18m ($36m). Superscape has had a troubled time and has not recorded a profit since its move into mobile games. In the year ending January 2005 the company reported a loss of £5.5m on revenues of £4m and in the year ending January 2006 the company's position had worsened, losing £9.6m on revenues static at £4m.

Our take...
The deal will bring Glu an increase in revenues although some significant restructuring will be required to bring profitability from the new operations. Superscape brings expertise in 3D mobile games, an area in which Glu's current portfolio is lacking. However, 3D titles have significantly larger development costs without a corresponding increase in consumer revenues. Although 3D titles are typically sold at higher price points, the addressable market is smaller than for conventional games and consumers seem more interested in simpler, 2D casual puzzle titles. Superscape, through deals with various movie studios including Universal Studios and Sony Pictures, has produced mobile games based on a number of movie licences. However, many of these are for movies which had a theatrical release date ten or more years ago (such as Independence Day) and these licences are unlikely to have added significant value to the company.
