> AT&T partners MSpot for two new music services

AT&T is offering two new services in conjunction with mobile music content and technology provider MSpot: Make-UR-Tones and Remix. With Make-UR-Tones, users can create 30 second ringtone clips from over 250,00 full tracks provided by major labels EMI Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. The service costs $6.99 per month for 3 ringtones, with additional ringtones at $2.99 each. Make-UR-Tones is currently available on Samsung SYNC, A737 and A747 as well as on Motorola V3XX devices. Remix enables users to download up to 75 tracks a month from their home computer by wireless for a monthly fee of $9.99. Each additional bundle of 10 tracks costs $2.99. Remix is offered on the Samsung SYNC, A737 and the LG Shine. AT&T also announced that it will make its current music service offered with Napster available to more handsets by Summer 2008.

Our take...
AT&T is expanding its music offerings whilst attempting to capitalise on present trends within the mobile music market. The increasing availability of MP3 phones means consumers tend to be using full track music as ringtones rather than purchasing them separately, forcing a decline in the ringtone market. With Make-UR-Tones, AT&T is offering an easy and legal method of customising MP3 tracks. Sideloading music from computer to mobile is an extremely popular method of getting music onto the mobile device, avoiding the often costly and confusing data charges associated with downloading music over the air. AT&T is offering a simple monthly charge to transfer songs between the devices over the air rather than needing to physically connect the two devices. However, Screen Digest predicts that service uptake will not be significant. Given the increasing consumer appetite for free music, it seems unlikely that users will be willing to pay for limited services which they can otherwise get for free.</div>]
