Sony Ericsson has announced content deals with 10 record labels in anticipation of the launch of PlayNow Arena. Sony Ericsson's PlayNow service was first introduced in 2004 offering the preview and download of polyphonic ringtones. Since then it has increased its content to include mastertones, games, full-track downloads, themes and wallpapers and is available in 32 countries. In November 2007, Sony Ericsson announced its intention to launch an expanded music service, PlayNow Arena, combining access to a catalogue of over 5 million tracks with popular applications such as TrackID, a song recognition service. Hits on the TrackID website have doubled in the last three months, currently reaching 200,000 a day. The company plans to launch the service in Scandinavia and Finland in May 2008, and be available in over 30 markets by the end of the year. Our take... Deals with the Bollywood company Hungama and The Orchard, popular in Latin America and Asia highlight Sony Ericsson's intent to enter some of the large and fast emerging mobile content markets. Hot on the heels of Sony Ericsson's announcement, Nokia has stated that it is looking to sign more labels to its 'Comes with Music' service. It currently only has a deal with Universal Music Group. Both Sony Ericsson and Nokia are examples of the recent drive by handset manufacturers to launch off-portal music services connected with their devices. It will be interesting to see how operators will respond to the competition when these and similar services launch.
