> Revenues up, but churn also higher for DirecTV

US satellite operator DirecTV has seen its US operational revenues jump by 14 per cent from the second quarter 2007, reaching $3.9bn in the three months leading up to October. ARPU also showed an increase, fuelled by raises in channel package prices and by better take-up of DirecTV's advanced services--its PVRs and HDTV offerings. Churn however, increased in the period, hitting 1.61 per cent monthly, and while still down on the same period in 2006, DirecTV has seen a consistent trend of it increasing through 2007, having started the year at a low of 1.44 per cent.

However, despite the higher churn exhibited this quarter, net additions were greater than in previous periods, and almost 50 per cent larger than those seen in the third quarter 2006. The company reported that the increase was primarily due to the demand for its advanced services, with half of all new customers taking a PVR and/or HDTV. This is a marked contrast to the same period last year, when fewer than 30 per cent of new customers were taking the services. This has had an impact on subscriber addition related costs, which increased from $325m in the third quarter 2006 to $417 in the same period 2007. DirecTV now has a US customer base of nearly 16.6m.

Our take...
The quarter's results were a mixed bag for DirecTV, as while revenues have continued to soar, they have had little effect on overall profitability, with operating profits actually down slightly on 2006. The steadily increasing churn is also a little worrying for the company, seeing as its current strategy rests with attracting high-value low-churn customers; however, in light of the recent price increases, too much shouldn't be read into this result. The company's current market position does seem to be working though, with extremely strong net additions in a quarter which saw cable operator Comcast add only 11,000 TV customers, and Time Warner Cable shed a further 83,000. DirecTV's main challenge now is to maintain or increase its profitability in the face of rising subscriber addition costs--further decreasing its churn rates will be key to this.
