Orange launches cross-platform pay TV service
Orange is launching a package of six pay TV channels, available on satellite, ADSL and mobile. The package will launch first in France in the fourth quarter of 2008. Branded as Orange cinéma séries, it will be available to the France Telecom subsidiary's ADSL customers in France, and will be available on the Eutelsat satellite in areas not covered by its network. The channels will be available to Orange TV, Internet and mobile customers. One channel will be high definition. There were 1.2m TV on ADSL subscribers in France at the end of 2007. Coverage will also be boosted by satellite access through services provided by Globecast (a France Telecom subsidiary).
Orange has launched mobile TV services in France, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, Spain and the UK. The company has not release global figures for its mobile TV users, but Screen Digest estimates that Orange has over 1m mobile TV subscribers in France alone, where the service has proven most successful.
Orange cinéma séries will be available as linear TV on a subscription basis, with the programming also available on an on-demand basis. Customers will be able to transfer programming to portable devices, including mobile phones, to watch on the move.
The company unveiled first window agreements with Warner Bros. International Television, HBO, Fidélité Films and Gaumont. There will be exclusive releases of a number of titles through the channels, including some Warner Bros films, new series from HBO, and all new movie releases from Fidélité Films. Orange is talking to other studios to secure rights for the new service. It has already secured rights to the French football league championship, including one live match a week and highlights, starting with the 2008/9 season which kicks off in August.
Our take... Despite the somewhat low-key nature of the announcement, Orange's service will be a significant challenge to Canal Plus, which appeared to have cemented its dominance of the French pay-TV market when it merged its Canalsat service with TPS in January 2007. The threat of competition from Orange and other telcos was one of the motivations for the merger, so although the launch of Orange cinema series is unwelcome news for Canal Plus it is not a surprise. Orange will be competing with Canal Plus for content deals with key suppliers like the US studios and is likely to be in the market for key sports events as well. Eutelsat was the satellite platform used by TPS and is still being used by some free to air and digital terrestrial channels, which could bolster the consumer appeal of Orange cinéma séries. However, many former TPS subscribers who switched to CanalSat will have moved their satellite dishes to pick up the CanalSat channels from Astra.

Internet protocol TV market
Although IPTV as a platform has yet to achieve a subscriber base to rival that of cable or satellite, it has made serious gains in the years since it first arrived in Europe. France, is, and will remain, the main market for IPTV in Europe, with seven operators and a penetration rate of over 14 per cent. Its market share (now over 50 per cent of Europe's IPTV viewers) will decline as other European IPTV services start to take hold. By 2011, 65 per cent of European IPTV viewers will be outside France.
