Disney buys into Spanish digital terrestrial market
Walt Disney Iberia is to enter the Spanish digital terrestrial market after agreeing to buy 20 per cent of Net TV, a digital television channel controlled by Spanish newspaper group Vocento. Net TV controls one of six digital licenses awarded by the Spanish government in 2000, following the collapse of failed pay DTT service Quiero TV. It operates two channels on DTT: Net TV and Flymusic. Disney paid €27m for the 20 per cent stake, valuing Net TV at €135m. Vocento will retain 55 per cent of the channel and its current partner in Net TV, Interconomia subsidiary Homo Didens, will keep 25 per cent.
Our take... Digital terrestrial television is set to become the key digital TV platform in Spain as the country moves towards analogue switch off in 2010. Although Disney Channel is carried on all Spanish pay TV services, pay TV has been relatively unsuccessful and currently reaches just 26 per cent of Spanish TV households through satellite platform Digital Plus, cable operators and IPTV. A partnership with Net TV will immediately boost Disney's reach in Spain, giving it access to an additional 29 per cent of homes. By 2010, that reach will be 100 per cent, providing a significant distribution advantage over pay TV-only channels (we forecast that total pay TV penetration will have grown to just 29.5 per cent by 2010). Net TV was one of two new channels, along with Veo TV, to receive a license in 2000. The other four licenses went to established players RTVE, Antena 3,Telecinco and Canal Plus (now Cuatro). As a new player, Net TV has struggled to get access to compelling content and build a significant market in the DTT space. The Disney partnership should go some way to addressing that. Net TV's peer Veo TV already has a content partnership with Sony Entertainment Television for one of its two DTT channels. The Dinsey/Net TV deal has been submitted to Spain's regulator for approval.
