China to launch high definition DTT in 2008
China will launch high-definition terrestrial digital TV broadcasts in 2008, according to a national five-year (2006-2010) guideline on cultural development recently published. There are currently three HD channels in China, launched earlier this year, but all are transmitted on digital cable. The existing channels (the New Vision channel from Shanghai Media Group and two movie services from China Film Group and CCTV) are compressed using MPEG-2 and currently available in around 20 Chinese cities. The launch of HD on DTT in 2008 is in line with China's plan for HD production and transmission of the Beijing Olympic Games. It is reported that HD channels on DTT will be offered by CCTV. Broadcasters will have to use the recently released Chinese DTT standard but the compression codec (MPEG-2 or MPEG-4) has yet to be specified.

With 378 million TV households and 152 million cable TV, China is the world's largest television and cable market. Cable dominates the multi-channel industry as satellite reception is banned and IPTV is in its infancy. Cable networks in China
Without the competition from satellite that exists elsewhere, cable has built a strong position in China and now has 142m subscribers, of which 26m are digital households. Despite the size of the overall cable market in China, the cable industry is highly fragmented. In 2001, large networks with 200,000 or more households accounted for less than 10 per cent of Chinese cable networks. Today, more than 50 per cent of networks have fewer than 20,000 households.
