Optus mounts challenge for wholesale customers
Australian number two telco Optus has announced launch plans for wholesale high-speed broadband Internet and standard telephony services over its next-generation network, marking the first major challenge against national incumbent Telstra in the country's wholesale market. Owned by Singapore Telecommunications, Optus has been conducting tests of the network and support systems since July 2006 including trials of ADSL2+ Internet and telephony services by Internet service providers Exetel, Internode and iSeek Communications. A commercial launch is expected in the fourth quarter of 2006.
New network will provide wholesale customers with improved services to sell-on to their residential subscribers. In particular, new ADSL2+ high-speed Internet services facilitate faster data transfer speeds that will make Internet browsing, streaming video, live audio and online gaming more efficient. Optus is expected to provide wholesale customers with the same 20Mbps broadband Internet service it currently offers to its retail customers. Optus's wholesale offer is expected to intensify competition in the country's broadband wholesale market which Telstra dominates. However, new network provides Optus with the opportunity to wholesale competitive next-generation services which should help to strengthen the company's position against Telstra.
Optus signed deal with Chinese equipment provider Huawei Technologies for development of its next-generation network in February 2005. Optus inaugurated the network in April 2006 with the launch of consumer services including broadband Internet called Optus DSL Direct and home telephony called Optus Local Direct. The new network extended Optus's broadband Internet service reach from 1.4m to 2.9m homes and businesses in Australia, including for the first time the metropolitan markets of Adelaide, Canberra and Perth.
