Echostar satellite launched out of position

SES Americom has confirmed that Echostar's latest satellite AMC-14 (launched on 15 March from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan) has failed to acquire its correct geostationary orbital position due to an anomaly during launch. The satellite is currently located in a stable, lower than planned orbit.

The satellite's main mission is to provide the extra bandwidth required by Dish Networks to increase its offering of HD channels. Dish networks said that is does not expect this delay to impact its plans to increase its HD offering by 60% over the next two months.

Our take...
Satellites used to broadcast TV channels such as AMC-14 typically occupy orbits that allow them to maintain a constant position above a fixed point on the Earth's service facilitating continuous coverage of the area bellow. Such geostationary orbits are achieved but placing satellites about 36,000 km above and parallel to the equator. Failure to meet either of these conditions will result in the satellite moving relative to the desired fixed point and therefore fluctuations in coverage occur.

For AMC-14 to serve its intended purpose it must be transferred to the correct orbital position. An orbital transfer is the most fuel expensive manoeuvre that a satellite can perform. A satellite's operational life-span is often governed primarily by its fuel supply. Echostar will almost certainly see a loss in revenue from leasing bandwidth to Dish networks due to AMC-14's delayed in-service date and reduced operational life span which was originally estimated at 15 years before the anomaly.
