Premiere switch to NDS simulcrypt
German pay DTH operator Premiere has announced that it will continue working with Nagravision while switching across new STB deployments to NDS. Premiere has signed a deal with Nagravision to continue using Nagra CA until at least 2012. This will involve upgrading to Nagra's latest system following a significant and long standing piracy of Premiere through hacked Nagra CA. Premiere will be upgrading to NDS Videoguard CA.
Our take... While it is not unexpected that Premiere have switched to NDS, the details of the deal were not clear. Premiere are now in a position to deploy only NDS in new STBs, and upgrade all capable STBs to Videoguard as needed. Legacy older boxes will be upgraded to the new Nagravision CA in an attempt to block piracy. While Premiere could migrate the entire network to NDS over the course of a year or so, the market seems likely to remain simulcrypt for some time more. This is both because Premiere satellite customers own their own STBs, making wholesale replacement difficult for legacy boxes, and because Premiere supply content to all the major cable operators.
