AMC-14 declared total loss by SES-Americom
SES-Americom confirmed on April 11 that the satellite launched on March 15 2008 is to be retired. AMC-14, launched for leasing to Echostar Technologies, fell significantly short of the altitude required to obtain a geostationary orbit after a fault occurred during launch. The satellite is so far off orbit that the amount of fuel expended positioning it correctly would reduce its operational lifespan so much that SES-Americom does not believe it an economically viable manoeuvre. Rather than waste time and money planning and executing the complex Hohmann orbit transfer, that would be required to reposition AMC-14, SES-Americom has instead notified its insurers of the loss and expects to receive a $150million payout in the coming months.
Our take... While the loss of the satellite may dent SES-Americom's pride it is unlikely to have any direct negative effects on its financial position. Echostar on the other hand doesn't insure its satellites or revenue generated by them. It will lose the 10-15 years of revenue that would have been generated from leasing AMC-14 transponder space to Dish Networks who in turn planned to use the bandwidth to increase HD broadcasts. Dish Networks claims the loss of AMC-14 will not affect its HD plans.
It's unlikely that any other use will be found for the stricken satellite. The equipment installed on AMC-14 is specifically for the communications industry and will not function correctly at lower orbital altitudes. It's also unlikely that it could be used as a platform to install equipment for other tasks (such as Earth observation or position triangulation) as the satellite, designed for a geostationary orbit, will be much less manoeuvrable than those designed for operation in lower orbits.
