DVD authoring tool manufacturer Sonic Solutions has reduced the level of hand-programming required to create the interactive menus and value added material (VAM) for Blu-ray Disc (BD) through its software partnership group Extended Developer Group (EDGe). The group which includes Sonic, Clickteam and ASV Corp has developed new plug-in applications that allow content developers to circumvent some of the time-consuming manual programming that BD-J - the Java-based computer language required to create complex interactive elements such as games and interactive menus for BD - entails.
Our take...
These new applications will enable software developers to reduce the time spent on the more mundane elements of BD functionality and focus on creative VAM - thought to be a key differentiator between BD and DVD - and thus help to significantly reduce BD authoring costs. Such developments enabled the streamlining of the original DVD menu systems and the presence of such programming shorthand was thought to be a distinct advantage for the now defunct HD DVD format.
