Blu-ray Disc replication capacity edges higher
InfoSmart, DVDR manufacturer based in Hong Kong, has bought a Blu-ray Disc (BD) replication line from Hong Kong-based Anwell Technologies for $1.4m. The Anwell Smart BD system, capable of producing 500,000 discs a month, will be installed at InfoSmart's Hong Kong plant, creating the first BD replication line in commercial use in Greater China. The line is expected to be actively replicating Blu-ray discs by end June 2008. Meanwhile, optical disc replicator Arvato Digital Services, part of the Bertelsmann group, has installed a BD replication line at its German headquarters at Gütersloh, in response to growing customer demand. Move adds European BD replication capacity to the company, which already replicates BD in its North Carolina facility in the US.
Our take... Although worldwide BD replication capacity is increasing, Screen Digest believes that, unless the rate of installation of new production lines accelerates rapidly over the next few months, BD replication will still fall short of potential demand in 2008. The end of the format war increased the projected consumer demand for BD video beyond original industry expectations and the success of the PS3 games console increases the installed base of BD video playback devices over that of DVD at the same stage of development. However, to date optical disc manufacturers have remained understandably cautious in their investment in the next-generation format, many maintaining a wait-and-see policy. Demand for BD replication is projected to peak this year towards the end of the third quarter as studios, independent distributors and video games authoring houses prepare product for the crucial fourth quarter. The success of BD's first Christmas as the de facto hi-def video format will arguably depend not just on the volume of discs but also the variety of titles available; rights holders seeking to release into this market may find competition for replication capacity is fierce.

DVD manufacturing-on-demand
DVD replication is suited to the on-demand model. Burn times have been reduced and the cost of components has fallen, so it is now a relatively quick and affordable procedure. The development of selfcontained replication units has made it possible for DVDs to be manufactured on-demand, and on-site, in retail stores and warehouses.
