UK arm of troubled DVD replicator collapses
UK-based optical disc replicator and distributor ODS Business Services has gone into administration and closed down its replication plant. Move follows significant trading losses last year and debts—reported to be in the region of £20m—to German parent company ODS Business Services Group, which is itself also in administration. Following a period of rapid expansion, ODS Group became Europe's largest CD and DVD replicator, active in more than 10 European countries. UK operation was created in 2006 when the group acquired the assets of British replicator Thamesdown and expanded in 2007 with the acquisition of Deluxe Media Services. Group underwent a major restructuring in late 2007 following the collapse of its flagship plant in Germany.
Our take... ODS's DVD replication business was initially dominated by short replication runs (eg, for newspaper cover-mounts), however, in November 2006 it won the contract to replicate over 100m DVDs annually for Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPIE). It also invested a reported $9m in HD DVD production lines; Universal was the only US studio to support the HD DVD format exclusively until latter's withdrawal from the market earlier this year. However, by late 2007 ODS found itself unable to meet all its replication commitments, leading it to release clients from their exclusivity clauses and allow them to source products and services elsewhere. Separately, ODS was involved in a legal battle with DVD patent holder MPEG LA over DVD royalties prior to entering into the MPEG-2 Patent Portfolio License in March 2007. The administrators of the UK operations have stated that they hope to sell the distribution business as a going concern, although this seems unlikely in the current climate.

DVD manufacturing-on-demand
DVD replication is suited to the on-demand model. Burn times have been reduced and the cost of components has fallen, so it is now a relatively quick and affordable procedure. The development of selfcontained replication units has made it possible for DVDs to be manufactured on-demand, and on-site, in retail stores and warehouses.
