Microsoft drops price of Xbox 360
Microsoft yesterday announced a 13% price drop on the Xbox 360 Premium console to $349 from $399. Canada followed with a C$100 drop.
Our take... This was seen to be an inevitable response to heightened competitive activity and Screen Digest Games Intelligence had already built a price reduction into the forecasts before the end of 2007. Microsoft must be praised for maintaining price points for so long up until now.
With regard to PS3, the recent re-pricing announcements must be seen as a Summer holding strategy until more permanent reductions are made in the Autumn. Indeed, Screen Digest has built a further price reduction into the PS3 2007 forecasts.
We do not expect the price drop to have any impact on the rate of takeup of the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, which is modeled as a percentage of total installed base of consoles. Arguably more relevant to the hi-def video sector is the recent $20 drop in the price of the add-on itself, previously covered in Screen Digest Video Intelligence.

DVD manufacturing-on-demand
DVD replication is suited to the on-demand model. Burn times have been reduced and the cost of components has fallen, so it is now a relatively quick and affordable procedure. The development of selfcontained replication units has made it possible for DVDs to be manufactured on-demand, and on-site, in retail stores and warehouses.
