Adult entertainment group Playboy Enterprises is exiting the DVD business as of 2009, with a view to re-focusing on internet delivery and its current video-on-demand operation. The company aims to reduce costs by $10m through the closure, which will result in loss of around 80 staff.
Our take...
Adult entertainment, which is frequently credited with stimulating the early growth of both VHS and DVD formats, has in recent years suffered disproportionately from the availability of content - both paid and free - distributed via the internet. Adult DVD is a difficult market to track accurately, due to lack of data, but reports suggest that the sector has been in decline in the US and internationally for a number of years. By comparison, the emergent hi-def disc market, particularly Blu-ray, was initially unable to benefit from the adult genre partly due to disc replication bottlenecks and the reported insistence by Disney that its BD replicators should not engage in adult content replication.
The BD replication market has expanded and adult content is now available on the format, although some industry insiders believe it is inappropriate for pornography as it potentially exposes actors' and actresses' physical imperfections. Similar criticisms have been made by make-up artists, actors and actresses working outside the genre, who also fear that the detail offered by hi-def could prove detrimental to their careers.
