The cinema sector in Europe is facing new challenges, among which the transition to digital technology is particularly important. Digital cinema brings with it major changes in the way audiovisual works are produced, distributed and exhibited. For the mainstream, there is a substantial momentum for conversion to digital on the back of recent 3D-films box office records and upcoming films from the studios. It is therefore crucial that the independent distribution and exhibition sectors are not left behind and further marginalised.
