Blu-ray Gains Fail to Offset Slump in Int'l DVD sales

In this Company Report

International (world excluding US and Canada) consumer spending on video software fell 3.6% to $26.4bn in 2008. This was mainly due to the first real downturn in the value of DVD purchases. Blu ray (BD) disc sales of $482m offset only part of the decline. Distributor revenues fell slightly further than consumer spend, off 6% to $15bn. This year is likely to see a further decline of 2.5% in consumer sales of DVD, but Screen Digest expects a modest recovery in 2010 will be driven by sales of BD.
