In this Industry Report
An overall year-on-year view of Q3 09's hardware sales volumes is a negative one, dropping from 15.6m to 12.3m units on a worldwide basis. The PAL territory in particular suffers the most severe decline, but does face the toughest comparative given its 2008 performance. Both Wii and PSP stumble in the region, with the greatest deficit due to DS and DSi doing less to buffer the shortfall than in Japan and USA. The PS3 shows positive growth across the board, spurred by its price drop and refreshed hardware in the form of the Slim iteration.
Highlights: - Release of Dragon Quest IX on DS and DSi allows the format to maintain hardware sales strength in Japan.
- Year-on-year, Xbox 360 begins to dip slightly. This is in line with Screen Digest's expectations, after the console's solid growth in H2 2008.
- Nintendo's Wii wanes significantly, its Q3 09 worldwide sales dropping 33 per cent below those of Q3 08.
- Also included are forecasts for installed base and year-end sales volumes to 2013, now incorporating data for PSP Go.
