In this Industry Report
There has been little change in the trend at the top of the mobile games market in Q3 2009. As in Q2 2009, EA Mobile reported record sales and maintained its lead as the world's number one mobile games publisher. French publisher Gameloft also reported year-on-year growth. It remains in second place and is the only publisher currently capable of challenging EA. A strong performance on games for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch was again a key driver of growth. Third placed Glu Mobile again reported a decline in revenues. Though, as in Q2, it did report sales above its expectations achieving $19.6m revenues for the quarter ($0.6m above its own forecast).
Games based on original intellectual property (IP) made up the majority of new games releases from major mobile publishers for the first time in Q3 2009, another effect of Apple's impact on the mobile games market. Historically, games based on IP from console games, TV programmes and films have tended to dominate major publishers' release slates as they tried to meet network operators' demands for well known brands.
Highlights: - EA Mobile remained the world's number one mobile games publisher, with record Q3 revenues of $51m, up 8.5 per cent on 2008.
- Gameloft reported more modest growth from mobile games sales, with revenues of $40.9m (up 5.6 per cent year-on-year).
- Glu Mobile remains in decline, with revenues down 18 per cent year-on-year.
- Games based on original intellectual property (IP) made up the majority of major publishers' releases for the first time in Q3 2009.
