Sezmi's personalized TV offers quick path to video for telcos
April 15, 2010 TV viewers in southern California now have access to a new affordable pay-TV option besides cable, satellite, and IPTV, thanks to a little startup called Sezmi. The Belmont-based service provider uses a combination of broadcast digital spectrum and broadband Internet to deliver TV and video content to its subscribers at competitive prices. To keep costs down, Sezmi relies on other companies' infrastructure for delivery: leased bandwidth from local independent broadcast stations for linear channels, and 'over-the-top' (OTT) Internet delivery taking advantage of a standard consumer broadband connection. A retail launch via Best Buy is the first step in the company's strategy; ultimately it hopes to provide a cost-effective alternative to a full-blown IPTV service. Tables and charts included:
