TV Technology - STB market monitor H1 2010
November 23, 2010
Worldwide set-top box (STB) shipment volumes will fall to 180m in 2010, down from 195m in 2009. Industry value will also fall to Euro 12.5b, but pay TV STB revenues will rise to Euro 9.6b. Pace has become the number one pay TV set-top box vendor by shipment volumes, shipping 9.5m units in H1 2010, whilst Motorola remain the number one vendor by revenues from pay TV STB shipments.
2010 will see volumes of set-top box shipments decline, as the 2009 analogue switch-off in the United States hits sales of free-to-air (FTA) digital terrestrial STBs. Pay TV STB shipments will continue to rise to 123m in 2010, driven by satellite and cable, although shipments to IPTV operators fall to 13m.
Revenues will continue to fall in 2010 to €12.5b, driven primarily by the decline in FTA shipments. However, the value of the pay TV STB industry will in fact increase to €9.6b as the product mix shifts towards higher volume of high-end HD and DVR products.
2011 will see a continuing decline in both shipments and revenues, as pay TV shipment volumes fall and FTA shipment volumes plateau.
