Playing catch-up: Biggest payoff coming in December

December 09, 2010

The studios have held four of the biggest titles of the year for release in the first two weeks in December, looking to capture holiday shoppers' interest as retail sales of movies on disc have telescoped more and more into the first two weeks of release. If they pay off, the video retail market will come in close to the -9% projected for year-end 2010. Box-office to video conversion rates have continued to decline this year, but may stabilize in Q4; analysis by box office range shows that Blu-ray disc sales are becoming big enough in many categories to offset the ongoing slide in DVD sales.
