Global Advertising Agencies Start Recovery

Aggregated revenues for the big five advertising agencies reached close to $10bn in the 1Q of 2010. The sector is returning to growth ahead of expecations, with organic growth of 0.8 per cent during the quarter, following a quarter in which growth had fallen by 6.6 per cent. These results came as a surprise, as growth was not anticipated prior to Q2 2010 for most groups.

Chart summary: Organic growth in the US during Q1 2010 is particularly noteworthy, ranging between three and five per cent for leading media agencies. The North American region was first to be hit by the recession and saw some of its worst decline in Q1 2009, translating into better year-on-year comparisons in Q1 2010, which facilitated an earlier recovery.
