Mobile Music Continues To Evolve
July 28, 2010 The story of mobile music has evolved along a different path to the rest of the record business. Mastertones - ringtones that use sound recordings - were an unexpectedly fertile revenue source in markets all across the world. In India, South Korea, Japan and China, ringback tones became another lucrative business. But mobile music revenue in the West declined dramatically with the falling popularity of mastertones around 2007. Cloudbased mobile music streaming services have emerged over the past year or two and are becoming increasingly popular but they have not been able to offset this decline.
Chart summary: Mobile music markets in Asia Pacific are quite different to those in Western Europe. Except in Japan, the bulk of mobile music revenues come from personalisation services (mastertones and ringback tones).
