TV Viewing Still Growing Globally
July 28, 2010
Average TV viewing time has continued to grow globally in 2009. According to Eurodata TV, the average daily viewing per individual has reached three hours and 12 minutes, three minutes more than 2008 - ie, approximately two per cent - despite the fact that 2009 was a year without major sports events. TV viewing has been growing steadily, however slowly, over the past 10 years. The increase of choice, functionality and quality brought by digital multichannel, flat-panel screens, DVRs and HDTV, as well as increased leisure time, has revived a consumption that was predicted to drop.
Chart summary:
In mature markets, like Western Europe and the US, the audience is plateauing at high levels. The US grew three minutes at 4h40, Germany grew five minutes at 3h32. But in emerging economies, TV viewing is still organically growing from lower bases.
