Games Market Monitor - Hardware Q2 2010
August 30, 2010 Year-on-year hardware volumes on a global basis are down just over 20 per cent for the second quarter of 2010, underscoring the fact that a number of platforms are now in decline. The console cycle is maturing and, as is typical, it is beginning to wane. Sony's PlayStation 3 is the only TV console to experience a major worldwide uptick for the period, while Nintendo's DS handhelds drop swiftly, emphasising the timeliness of Nintendo's forthcoming 3DS unit. In terms of region-specific performance, PAL remains the worst offender, with significant drops in Nintendo's hardware contributing to a severe downturn, while PS3 enjoys a gain of over 40 per cent. Sony's console sees progress in the USA, followed by Xbox 360 in the wake of a price-cut and hardware refresh. Japan holds steady against the doldrums experience throughout 2009, with both PS3 and Nintendo's Wii showing vitality in the region, but its overall share of the global hardware market weakens.
