2009 in film: Box office grows but disc sales still shrinking
January 29, 2010 Total US film spending in 2009 was virtually flat, down a fractional 0.3% from 2008, while total consumption across all the transactional markets-theatrical, home video retail and rental, video-on-demand and electronic sell-through-was up 4%. Considering the seriousness of the recession this is good news. But the continued decline in DVD sales is not being offset by the combined growth in Blu-ray sales and rentals, increases in VOD spending, and growing Internet sales and rentals, leaving studios facing a challenging future.
