New-release features report - Q2 shifts first half results

September 16, 2010

The second quarter saw sales of new-release features on video picking up, particularly on Blu-ray which enjoyed a huge boost from sales of Avatar, but a dismal first quarter meant that results for the half were still down over H1 2009. The loss of Movie Gallery and Hollywood video stores and liquidation of their stock put a damper on the physical rental market, while growth of Netflix subscribers, new revenue-sharing deals and the continuing kiosk rollout shifted studios' share of rental revenue. An analysis of the first half by box office range show video revenue down from H1 2009 in almost every category.

Tables and charts included:

  • Q2 2010 Top ten titles
  • Studio share of H1 2010 new-release features: retail vs. rental
  • Video analysis by box-office range
  • Box-office-to-video-retail conversion rates
  • First-half new-release: DVD vs. BD
