Consolidation in Danish IPTV market

September 29, 2010

In response to growing competition from the IPTV service of national telco TDC and low-cost pay DTT service Boxer, a consortium of local Danish telcos has emerged, aiming at providing a consolidated IPTV brand and improving the competitive profile of their individual consumer services. Heavy marketing by incumbent telco TDC of its own IPTV service has resulted in rapid growth in TDC TV. Combined with the ever-present threat of TDC's cable operations YouSee and that of new DTT platform Boxer, this growth may have come at the expense of the development of competing IPTV services. Alt-net Dansk Bredband is one company which has suffered from the heavy competition, losing 4,000 TV customers year-on-year - 17 per cent of its Q1 2009 subscriber base.
