The Global Transmission Market

Across the world there are now almost 1bn digital receivers in use for broadcast or IPTV transmission. The vast majority of these use one of the major broadcasting standards: ATSC, DMB, DVB or ISDB. DVB currently has the lead in the global market and is well split between pay and free, and across cable, satellite and terrestrial. Future growth should drive DVB to power almost 1bn receivers by 2014. This report includes both summary data and country by country data on transmission and digital receivers globally.

  • Total digital receivers in 2009 reached nearly 1bn units in active use
  • DVB commands over 50% of the total market and nearly 60% across major broadcast standards
  • Satellite is the most dependent platform upon DVB with 70% of receivers. Terrestrial is the least with around 40%
  • By the end of 2014, DVB receivers will have reached almost 1bn active units globally
