Market Monitor: 'Big 8' European Broadcasters 2011 Q1

This 24-page long, quarterly report combines Advertising Intelligence data and analyst commentary covering key Western Europe TV advertising markets (with special emphasis on each of the 'Big Five' markets) and analysis on the 'Big 8' broadcasting groups performance in terms of advertising revenues, over the period 2010-2014.

This market monitor report incorporates actual revenues reported by 'Big 8' broadcasting companies (Antena 3, ITV, M6, Mediaset, ProSiebenSat.1, RTL, Telecinco, TF1) in Q3, 2010, as well as Screen Digest estimates for Q4 and forecasts for all quarters of 2011. The report looks at the recent performance of these key European broadcasters in the free-to-air and multichannel segments they are operating (revenues, audience share) and puts it in perspective in their domestic markets.

Highlights:

  • Television advertising in 2010 showed a growth of nearly 8% on average in Western Europe, with UK (14%) and Sweden (20%) outperforming the rebound.
  • TV outperformed the overall advertising market in 2010 - it is recovering earlier and stronger than any other traditional media. Revenue growth was mostly driven by cost inflation in an inelastic market.
  • In the first nine months of 2010, net ad revenues reported by key European broadcasters showed a strong rebound with several posting high double-digit growth (e.g. Telecinco, ITV, M6).
  • TV viewing increased to new all-time records in several markets (France and Germany in particular).
  • For 2011, with sluggish economic conditions to remain and no major sports events, we expect the TV advertising growth to slow-down to low single-digit in most markets.
