Blu-ray and network delivery help sustain home video spending in 2010

January 06, 2011

US Consumer spending on home video entertainment declined -3.8% in 2010 from $19.2bn to $18.5bn, according to Screen Digest's preliminary estimates of the physical and digital-delivery markets. That is obviously bad news for film and TV-show producers and distributors, though the rate of decline was less than half of the -8% decline seen in the brutal recession year of 2009. Still, home entertainment sales and rentals are not seeing the same kind of post-recession uptick now being enjoyed by some other product categories.

Tables and charts included:

  • Total home video spending: retail vs. rental
  • US Consumer spending on video rentals by type
  • TV-connected Blu-ray vs. DVD households
  • Video retail spending by format
  • Rates of change: '09 vs. '10
  • Home video entertainment spending by household and media type
  • Online vs. physical spending: music
  • Online vs. physical spending: video
