Digital Cinema Over the Tipping Point
April 19, 2011 After over a decade of market priming, technical evolution, standards development, and creation of a commercial rollout mechanism, 2010 was the year that digital cinema finally took off. It was all thanks to something that wasn't even on the agenda back in 1999 - digital 3D. At the end of the year, there were 36,609 digital cinema screens in the world, a growth rate of 123.6 per cent over the previous year, and 32.1 per cent of the world's convertible screens. The growth was driven by 3D, but the wider 2D rollout began in earnest during the second half of the year, certainly among larger circuits. Tables and charts included:
