New-release feature films underperform on video in 2010

April 04, 2011

Physical video revenue from new-release feature films continued to decline in 2010, but a close look at the data suggests the market may be stabilizing. Box-office-to-video conversion rates, which have plummeted since the video peak in 2004, declined by just 19% last year vs. a 25% drop in 2009; an unusual uptick in conversion rate in the fourth quarter was further good news. Even better, first cycle video revenue from sales and rentals of the 2010 top ten titles outperformed the 2009 top ten, up by 11%, which confirms that there is still a market for discs in the US for the most popular films.

Tables and charts included:

  • Box-office-to-video retail revenue conversion rates by quarter
  • Top ten video titles: 2010 vs. 2009
