TV hardware sales in Brazil

August 25, 2011

The past decade in Brazil has been characterised by radical economic change. In the eight years spanning 2002 to 2010, unemployment fell from 12.9 per cent to 5.7 per cent, while GDP growth has remained consistently high, reaching 7.5 per cent by 2010. As purchasing power has increased for a greater portion of the population, the scale of the consumer electronics (CE) industry has inevitably developed in tandem. This report will discuss how economic development has affected the sales of key TV hardware in Brazil over the past decade, such as TV sets, retail set-top boxes and physical media hardware players, and looks at the prospects of sales for burgeoning technologies such as 3D and IP-connectable devices.

Highlights:

  • In 2010, 11.6m TV sets were sold, with flat-panel displays (FPD) taking up 70 per cent of all sales
  • Set-top box (STB) sales rocketed from 1.6m in 2009 to 4.2m in 2010, driven by pay TV
  • STBs for free-to-air TV and Blu-ray Disc (BD) players will accelerate between now and 2015

Tables and charts included:

  • Basic data for Brazil
  • STB shipments for major operators
  • iDTV vs free-to-air STB sales: 2008-2015
  • Sales of physcial media players: 2008-2015
