German Blu-ray 3D market surpasses the UK
August 08, 2012 IHS Screen Digest research indicates that in 2012 Germany will become the largest market for Blu-ray Disc 3D (BD3D) in Europe. This is the result of general stability for German video while the UK and French markets have fallen into decline. Reflective of the success for German video, the number of Blu-ray Disc 3D titles available at retail has rapidly grown since the launch of the 3D home video format in 2010. Germany now boosts the greatest number of 3DBD titles in the world. However, upon closer inspection, the quicker increase in BD3D titles in Germany than anywhere else is largely due to local German video distributors releasing a substantial number of 2D-to-3D conversions of catalogue titles aimed at the direct-to-video market. This Insight Report looks at the German BD3D market, in relation to the other two big European markets the UK and France, and the peculiar growth in the number of titles released on BD3D in Germany.
